Ann Curry

Ann Curry is a photojournalist, journalist and author who has reported on war zones for the past 45 years. Her research focuses on human suffering and disasters. Curry's mother was Japanese American and her U.S. Navy-sailor dad were both prominent figures in Curry's life. After World War II, her parents began to meet during her father's service in Japan. As a result of the military service of her father, her family has moved quite a lot. Curry completed her high school studies within Ashland Oregon. She graduated in 1978 from the University of Oregon with a bachelor's degree in journalism. She was exposed to a variety of cultures as well as her experiences throughout her childhood likely influenced her empathetic approach to communicating about issues of international significance. Ashland, Oregon is the location where Curry received her degree. In Medford where she began her broadcasting career with KTVL Channel 10 as an intern. At the age 22, she was able to become the first reporter to be female at KTVL. Then, she stepped into the role of anchor and reporter at KGW which is an NBC affiliate station located in Portland. After four years of service, she was hired as an anchor by KCBS TV which is located in Los Angeles. It was during her time with the station for 6 years that she was awarded two Emmy Awards.
